“When we can talk about the feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting and less scary.”

Fred Rogers

Abracadabra! I am Sukie, the little witch, and this is my favourite time of the year! Ohhh! How I adore October and especially Halloween… It’s such a magical and mysterious time, with all the fancy costumes, funny “trick or treats”, and spookiness…

As a parent, you will know that Halloween is also a time of year that can trigger some fears in young children. For children under 6 years of age, especially, it can be hard for them to distinguish between what is real and what is simply in their imagination.

As children grow, they can also develop different worries and fears. Being afraid of things like the dark, or monsters, intruders or unexplained sounds, etc., are developmental fears.

As parents/carers, you may also feel overwhelmed by your child’s big emotions, and you may find yourself feeling uncertain how to deal with these fears. Talking about your child’s fears and worries with them directly will support their emotional development and help them understand and cope with these big emotions.

This box will give you an invaluable opportunity to support your little one’s development as well as to connect with them through PLAY and FUN. You will also discover new ideas for how to respond to your child’s strong emotions.

These activities have drawn inspiration from both EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths) and will encourage your child to explore their curiosity and sense of adventure.
